Blood on the Tracks session 6, Minneapolis MN - 30.dec.1974, album version

Early one mornin' the sun was shinin'
I was layin' in bed
Wonderin' if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red
Her folks they said that our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama's homemade dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough
An' i was standin' on the side of the road
Rain fallin' on my shoes
Heading out for the east coast
Lord knows i've paid some dues, getting thru
Tangled up in blue.

She was married when we first met
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam i guess
But i used a little too much force
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out west
Split up on a dark sad night
Both agreein' it was best
She turned around to look at me
As i was walkin' away
I heard her say over her shoulder
''We'll meet again some day, on the avenue
Tangled up in Blue.''

I had a job in the great north woods
Workin' as a cook for a spell
But i never did like it all that much
An' one day the ax just fell
So i drifted down to New Orleans
Where i's lucky to be employed
Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat
Right outside of Delacroix
But all the while i was alone
The past was close behind
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind an' i just grew
Tangled up in blue.

She was workin' in a topless place
An' i stopped in for a beer
I just kept lookin' at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear
An' later on when the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same
She was standin' there in back of my chair
Said to me ''Don't i know your name?''
I muttered somethin' underneath my breath
She studied the lines on my face
I must admit i felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe
Tangled up in blue.

She lit a burner on the stove
An' offered me a pipe
''I thought you'd never say hello'', she said
''You look like the silent type''
Then she opened up a book of poems
An' handed it to me
Written by an italian poet
From the thirteenth century
An' every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burning coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you
Tangled up in blue.

I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs
There was music in the cafˇs at night
An' revolution in the air
Then he started dealin' with slaves
An' something inside of 'em died
She had to sell everything she owned
An' froze up inside
An' when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn
The only thing i knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue.

So now i'm goin' back again
I got to get to her somehow
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenters wives
Don't know how it all got started
I don't know what they're doin' with their lives
But me i'm still on the road
Headin' for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point of view

Five slightly different lyrics

Early one mornin' the sun was shinin'
He was layin' in bed
Wonderin' if she changed at all
If her hair was still red
Her folks they said their lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like mama's homemade dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough
An' he was standin' on the side of the road
Rain fallin' on his shoes
Headin' out for the old east coast
Lord knows he's paid some dues, gettin' thru
Tangled up in blue.

She was married when they first met
Soon to be divorced
He helped her out of a jam i guess
But he used a little too much force
An' they drove that car as far as they could
Abandoned it out west
[ And(1,2,5) / And they(3)] split up on a sad dark night
Both agreein' it was best
An' she turned around to look at him
As he was walkin' away
She said ''This [ can't be(1,2,3,5) / ain't(4) ] the end
We'll meet [ on another day(1,3,5) /again some day(2,4) ] on the avenue
Tangled up in blue.''

He had a job in the [ great(1,2,4,5) / old(3) ] north woods
Workin' as a cook for a spell
But he never did like it all that much
An' one day the ax just fell
[ So(1,2,4,5) /When(3) ] he drifted down to L.A.
Where he reckoned [ to try(1,2,3,5) / he'd tried(4) ] his luck
Workin' for a while in an airplane plant
Loadin' cargo onto a truck
But all the while he was alone
The past was close behind
He seen a lot of women
But she never escaped his mind an' he just grew
Tangled up in blue.

She was workin' in a topless place
[ I(1,2,3) / An' i(4,5) ] stopped in for a beer
I just kept lookin' at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear
An' later on [ as(1,2,3,4) / when(5) ] the crowd thinned out
I's about to do the same
She was standin' there in back of my chair
Said to me, ''What's your name?''
I muttered somethin' underneath my breath
She studied the lines on my face
I must admit i felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe
Tangled up in blue.

She lit a burner on the stove
An' offered me a pipe
''Thought you'd never say hello'', she said
''You look like the silent type''
Then she opened up a book of poems
An' [ offered(1) / handed(2,3,4,5) ] it to me
Written by an italian poet
From the thirteenth century
An' every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burning coal
Pourin' off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you
Tangled up in blue.

He was always in a hurry
Too busy or too stoned
An' everything [that(2)] she ever [ did plan(1) / planned(2,3,4,5) ]
Just had to be postponed
[ He(1,2,3,5) / She(4) ] thought they were successful
[ She(1,2,3,5) / He(4) ] thought they were blessed
With objects an' material things
But i never was impressed
An' when it all came crashin' down
I became withdrawn
The only thing i knew how to do
Was keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue.

So now i'm goin' back again
[ Got(1,4,5) / I got(2,3) ] to get to her some how
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are doctors wives
Don't know how it all got started
Don't know what they're doin' with their lives
But me i'm still on the road
Headin' for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point of view

Tangled Up In Blue 5

19 June 1984
cd imgGENUINE BOOTLEG SERIES Vol. 3 The Third One Now (T-636)

7 July 1984
cd imgREAL LIVE

  Live, Rome Italy - 19.jun.1984
Live, Wembley Stadium, London England UK - 7.jul.1984
Live, Slane Castle, Ireland - 8.jul.1984

Early one morning the sun was shinin'
An' he was layin' in bed
Wonderin' if she'd changed at all
If her hair was still red
Her folks they said that our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like mama's homemade dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough
He was standin' at the side of the road
Rain fallin' on his shoes
Heading out for the old east coast
Radio blastin' the news straight on thru
Tangled up in blue.

She was married when they first met
To a man four times her age
He left her penniless in a state of regret
It was time to bust out of the cage
An' they drove that car as far as they could
Abandoned it out west
Splitting up on a dark sad night
Both agreein' it was best
She turned around to look at him
As i was walkin' away
Sayin' "I wish i could tell you all the things
That i never learned how to say''
He said "That's alright, baby, i love you too''
But we were tangled up in Blue.

He had a steady job an' a pretty face
An' everything seemed to fit
One day he could feel the waste
He put it all down an' split
An' he drifted down to New Orleans
Where they treated him like a boy
He nearly went mad in Baton Rouge
He nearly drowned in Delacroix
But all the while he was alone
The past was close behind
He had one too many lovers and
None of them were too refined all except for you
But you were tangled up in blue.

She was workin' in the blindin' light
An' i stopped in for a drink
I just kept lookin' at her face so white
I didn't know what to think
Later on when the crowd thinned out
I was gettin' ready to leave
She was standin' there right beside my chair
Sayin' "What's that you got up your sleeve?''
I said "Nothin' baby, an' that's for sure''
She leaned down into my face
I could feel the heat an' the pulse of her
As she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe
Tangled up in blue.

I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs
There was snow all winter an' no heat
Revolution was in the air
An' one day all of his slaves ran free
Something inside of him died
The only thing i could do was be me
An' get on the train an' ride
An' when it all came crashin' down
I was already south
I didn't know whether the world was flat or round
I had the worst taste in my mouth that i ever knew
Tangled up in blue.

So now i'm goin' on back again
Maybe tomorrow or maybe next year
I gotta find someone among the women an' men
Whose destiny is unclear
Some are masters of illusion
Some are ministers of the trade
All of the strong delusion
All of their bed are unmade
Me i'm still headin' towards the sun
Tryin' to stay out of the joint
We always did love the very same one
We just saw her from a different point of view
Tangled up in blue.  up
